Sam Taylor-Johnson - And he said, 'I just want you to be as creative as you want to be with it.' And he said, you know, 'I'm come visit you on set if you want me to or I won't or...' And I said to him, when we finished writing the script, I said, 'We're done. We have the script. Would you like to read it?' and he said, 'Do you want me to?' and I said, 'Actually no. Not really.' He said, 'Fine, it's yours so you carry on. I trust you.' I mean that is so very rare."

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Sam Taylor-Johnson, writer, director and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, writer, actor - on how making a smaller film can be more gratifying than a big budget movie:
Aaron Taylor-Johnson: "It's really where the collaborative community comes together. On an independent filmmaking scale everyone jumps in, it's this _ they're called passion projects and they're ones for the soul because you're really, you're challenged on every level but you're sort of pushing yourself and you're growing and you're learning and it's exciting and it's raw and it's unpredictable and where it's you sort of get the best quality of your sort of craft because there's happy accidents that make something magical and that's what you're always hoping for."

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Sam Taylor-Johnson, writer, director and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, writer, actor - on working together again after first meeting 10 years prior on 'Nowhere Boy':
Sam Taylor-Johnson: "Yeah, it had been 10 years since we made 'Nowhere Boy' and what was interesting is the minute we stepped back on set we were sort of straight back in it because we already had almost _ that language was already established when we first worked together and that's how we met and so as soon as we were back on set it just sort of clicked in straight away. But it never really unclicked because we were writing it and it just was like, 'Right, here we go.'"
Aaron Taylor-Johnson: "Yeah, I think we were just sort of encouraging one another and supporting one another's view. The beauty of being able to produce something that I full-heartedly got behind the director's vision and wanted Sam to have her voice and I've seen over the years the sort of the fights, the battles and the compromises you make along the way _ which we had to do in other ways on this movie, financially I suppose_ but ultimately the creativity and the ideas definitely spurned and blossomed from Sam as an artist and so that was great. So I think, yeah, I think we work well as a team and I think _ I feel like there's a bit of pressure and responsibility for me to deliver as best I can as an actor because that would really be sucky and poor if I gave Sam the worst version of me acting."

Sam Taylor-Johnson: "It did. It was amazing when Charlie signed on to working with me on 'Fifty Shades' and devastating when that didn't fully realize but what came out of that intense process was a great friendship and we talked a lot and, you know, and declared that one day we would work together so when we were writing and talking about the brother we both said 'Charlie.' And Charlie has a real deep emotional soulfulness about him that I haven't seen come across too often in movies but as a person he's very much that so it felt so right to cast him as James' brother, Bob."

STORYLINE:
SAM AND AARON TAYLOR-JOHNSON BRING 'A MILLION LITTLE PIECES' TO THE BIG SCREEN
Sam Taylor-Johnson knows what it's like to clash with the author of a book that's being made into a film. It happened to her with E.L. James throughout filming "Fifty Shades of Grey." So when she set out to bring James Frey's "A Million Little Pieces" to the big screen and he said she and her husband, Aaron, had creative control _ it was a blessing.
He said, 'I just want you to be as creative as you want to be with it.' And he said, you know, 'I'm come visit you on set if you want me to or I won't or...' And I said to him, when we finished writing the script, I said, 'We're done. We have the script. Would you like to read it?' and he said, 'Do you want me to?' and I said, 'Actually no. Not really.' He said, 'Fine, it's yours so you carry on. I trust you.' I mean that is so very rare."
Frey published "A Million Little Pieces" in 2003. It was originally promoted as a memoir about his time in rehab. In 2005, Oprah Winfrey selected it for her book club and the book gained a massive amount of attention. Soon after, a news investigation discovered that Frey had fabricated a number of details in the book. Winfrey originally defended Frey but ended up having him and his publisher on her talk show where she criticized them both for misleading her.
Thirteen years later, the book has finally been adapted and the Taylor-Johnsons say it was a labor of love. They co-wrote the script with Aaron starring in the lead role as James.
"For me, it became the beauty of filmmaking again that I had sort of forgotten about over the years of doing different things," said the director. "It took me right back to why I wanted to be a filmmaker and an artist."
The couple met when Sam directed Aaron in the movie "Nowhere Boy." Aaron joked of working with his wife again, "I feel like there's a bit of pressure and responsibility for me to deliver as best I can as an actor because that would really be sucky and poor if I gave Sam the worst version of me acting."
Charlie Hunnam also appears in the film as James' brother. Sam says the role came out of Hunnam almost starring in "Fifty Shades of Grey." Shortly after he was cast as Christian Grey, Hunnam had to withdraw because of a scheduling conflict.
"It was amazing when Charlie signed on to working with me on 'Fifty Shades' and devastating when that didn't fully realize but what came out of that intense process was a great friendship and we talked a lot and, you know, and declared that one day we would work together so when we were writing and talking about the brother we both said 'Charlie.' And Charlie has a real deep emotional soulfulness about him that I haven't seen come across too often in movies but as a person he's very much that so it felt so right to cast him as James' brother, Bob."
"A Million Little Pieces" is now in theaters.
