The ICMR-NIN dietary guidelines, while talking about the benefits of nutritionally adequate diets and physical activity among the elderly also highlighted that minimising or avoiding highly or ultra-processed and HFSS foods will delay age-related diseases. It also suggested that adequate water (two litres per day) should be consumed to avoid dehydration and constipation. The absolute number of elderly population is expected to increase to 323 million by 2050.
