3. SOUNDBITE (English) Andrew Crisp, Victoria Emergency Management Commissioner:
"What we saw across the state was more than 200 fires yesterday, a further new, a further 60 new fires that started from midnight last night. Again some really good work was done across a lot of our state in relation to those fires and a lot of those fires were contained and we had existing fires and again some really good work done on those fires."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Andrew Crisp, Victoria Emergency Management Commissioner:
"I want to just acknowledge again the tragic loss of life of another New South Wales Rural Fire Service (RFS) volunteer and other fire services members that were injured as part of that particular incident. Our thoughts go out to the New South Wales RFS and the friends and family of this young man who tragically lost his life and in effect he was working in support of Victoria and Victorians because that's the fire that's now coming into Victoria."

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Andrew Crisp, Victoria Emergency Management Commissioner:
"As you would imagine it's very early days yet and we don't have specific details about property losses but we do have significant property losses across all of East Gippsland (in eastern part of Victoria)."

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Andrew Crisp, Victoria Emergency Management Commissioner:
"So again, as we're flying our helicopters over that area today we're putting in our initial impact assessment teams (who) will have a better idea in relation to losses. But at this stage there are significant losses."
7. SOUNDBITE (English) Daniel Andrews, Victoria Premier:
"I've sent a message to (New South Wales) Premier Gladys Berejiklian offering our condolences. He (volunteer firefighter who was killed) was, he and his comrades were in support of their Victorian firefighting brothers and sisters as well. That fire has become a Victorian fire and we have the township at Corryong under attack as we speak. We send our best wishes and our thoughts and prayers to his family, friends and his colleagues."

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Daniel Andrews, Victoria Premier:
"These fires particularly in East Gippsland overnight and throughout yesterday were creating their own weather. That's how fierce, that's how active those fires were. There have been very significant losses in terms of property, stock, fencing, shedding. We won't be in a position to be able to confirm those details for some time but teams who are assessing that impact are on the ground right now doing that important work. There are a number of people who remain unaccounted for, four of them, and of course we have fears for their safety but we cannot confirm there whereabouts. As soon as we can bring any further information to you then of course we will do that."

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Steve Warrington, CFA (Country Fire Authority) Chief Officer:
"We've got three strike teams sitting in with the community, literally standing side-by-side with our community at the beachfront as they'll protect the two townships, up to two streets in that. But reports – I've spoken to the crews on the ground probably half an hour ago – it is pitch-black. It is quite scary in that community. The community right now is under threat but we will hold our line and they will be saved and protected."

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Steve Warrington, CFA (Country Fire Authority) Chief Officer:
"Once we were aware that that fire was about to hit the town (Mallacoota), early this morning, and when I say early at about 8 o'clock this morning, the sirens were activated (in Mallacoota). So everybody in that community that had a plan to go to the beach are at the beach. We are aware and as the premier has said some people chose not to take that advice and remain in their homes in those isolated communities. We won't be putting trucks into those areas but they were fully briefed and were aware before the fire impacted on that community."
Reporter: "So they're taking their chances?"
Warrington: "They've taking their chances absolutely. We will do everything we can in, given the guidance we've given to crews to stay in and around that community area."

11. SOUNDBITE (English): Steve Warrington, CFA (Country Fire Authority) Chief Officer:
"These people, you've got to love them, they're from their community, they've lost property, they're feeling it. These fires - they've seen fire conditions that we haven't experienced for a long time and a lot of these - a lot of our people have never experienced it before. And the reality is and I'll quote - and it's a little crass - but I spoke to them again this morning quote "It scared the crap out of us" unquote. That's from our firefighters. So don't think our firefighters because they wear a uniform are superheroes. They're people. They're from our communities, working with our communities to make sure they're safe as well. You've got to be proud of that."
