Kidney infection 'cause' of Cheetah Uday's death in Kuno National Park

Cheetah, one of the 12 big cats brought from South Africa, died on April 23 and the latest reports indicate kidney infection as the likely cause behind his death. Earlier, on March 27, a cheetah brought from Namibia also died of kidney failure.

Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh) : Kidney infection could be one of the reasons behind the death of Cheetah Uday in Kuno National Park, sources said. Initial reports of viscera and blood samples conducted after Cheeta Uday's death have indicated a mixed infection of virus and bacteria. However, for its detailed report, it has now been decided to conduct meta-genomic sequencing of these samples.

Apart from this, histopathological investigation is also being done, so that it can be ascertained that he did not die due to infection. Their reports will come in about 2 weeks. Significantly, Cheetah Uday died on April 23, the reason for which was said to be cardiovascular failure initially. He was one of the 12 cheetahs that were brought to India from South Africa.

Cheetah Uday was 6 years old. Chief Conservator of Forests J S Chauhan had told after its death that no infection was found in the blood test of the cheetah conducted before bringing it to India. However, even before this, on March 27, a cheetah brought from Namibia to Kuno in Sheopur died due to kidney failure.

It was said that the female cheetah was unwell for the last few days. After a gap, he was brought to the quarantine enclosure and his blood test was done, and then the infection was detected in his kidneys. Later he died. Although officials said that infection was found in its report in the tests conducted even before bringing it to India.

Cheetahs brought from Africa

With the aim of reviving cheetahs in the country, these big cats have been brought from Africa and settled in Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh. Two batches of these cheetahs have arrived so far. The first was brought from Namibia on September 17, the birthday of Prime Minister Modi. There were 8 cheetahs in it, while in the second batch, 12 cheetahs were brought from South Africa in the month of February.
