Indigo flight diverted to Dhaka lands in Guwahati 12 hours after take off

The Guwahati-bound private flight's pilot tried to get the wheels down in Kolkata, then at Bhubaneswar. Weather played spoilsport in Kolkata while the runway was closed in the Odisha capital, forcing him to pick Dhaka, which was the nearest available airport. The Indigo plane returned to Guwahati 12 hours after it took off from Mumbai.

Fog forces Mumbai-Guwahati IndiGo flight to land in Dhaka

Mumbai/Guwahati: An IndiGo flight from Mumbai on its way to Guwahati was forced to land in Dhaka owing to dense fog. As per media reports, the flight had to take the route to Dhaka because of inclement weather conditions. The Bangladesh capital is 400 km away from Guwahati.

It is understood that the flight landed in Guwahati 12 hours after take off. Earlier, the pilot initially wanted to land in Kolkata but, due to unfavourable weather had to divert the flight to Bhubaneswar, where the runway was closed. Finally, he had to decide on Dhaka as the nearest available airport.

According to an official statement from the airlines, "IndiGo flight 6E 5319 from Mumbai to Guwahati was diverted to Dhaka, Bangladesh due to bad weather in Guwahati. Due to operational reasons, an alternate set of crew is being arranged to operate the flight from Dhaka to Guwahati. The passengers were kept informed of updates and were served with refreshments on board. We sincerely regret the inconvenience caused."

The airline company has organised a new crew to facilitate the return flight to the original destination for the stranded passengers.

Former Youth Congress chief of the Mumbai unit Suraj Singh Thakur, who was travelling by the flight to Imphal to attend the Bharat Jodo Nyaya Yatra in Imphal, wrote on X, "I took IndiGo6E flight 6E 5319 from Mumbai to Guwahati. But due to dense fog, the flight couldn't land in Guwahati. Instead, it landed in Dhaka," he wrote, adding that all passengers onboard the flight had crossed the international border without their passports."

Thakur added that all passengers were stuck inside the aircraft. "I am stuck inside aircraft for 9 hours now. I left for Manipur (Imphal) for the 'Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra'. Let's see when I reach Guwahati and then will fly to Imphal," he added. (With Agency inputs)
