Dead Blue whale washes ashore in Tamil Nadu

The carcass of a giant blue whale washed ashore on Valinokkam beach in Tamil Nadu's Ramanathapuram district on Sunday morning. The marine mammal weighed about 7 tonnes and it was buried after postmortem.

Ramanathapuram: Fishermen of the coastal hamlets found a massive dead whale washed ashore on Valinokkam beach in Ramanathapuram district of Tamil Nadu on Sunday morning.

The fishermen informed the forest officials who rushed to the spot and assessed the situation. The dead marine mammal was 20.2m and weighed a whopping seven tonnes.

Forest Range Officer, Sikkandar Basha said that the whale would have died one month ago. "We are conducting a spot postmortem led by veterinarian Bhagat Singh. We will be able to ascertain the cause of death once the postmortem report is obtained", he said.

After the postmortem, two earthmovers were used to bury the carcass on the beach.
