J&K: Explosion near International Border in Kathua, live grenade recovered

Kathua (Jammu and Kashmir): A blast took place in Jammu and Kashmir's Hiranagar on Wednesday night following which a massive search operation has been launched in the area. Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Jammu Mukesh Singh said that an explosion-like sound was heard near Border Police Post (BPP) Sanyal located along the International Border (IB) in Hiranagar in Kathua district in the late evening hours on Wednesday.

The explosion was heard within the limits of the Hiranagar police station near the international border in the Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir, the official said. After receiving the information about the blast, a police team led by SSP Kathua Shivdeep Singh rushed to the site and started a search operation.

No injury has been reported so far. The official further said during the preliminary search it has observed that no movement of any article or human being has been found. "As soon as we got information of big bang sound blast, our police teams immediately rushed to the site and started a search operation," SSP Kathua Shivdeep Singh said.

However, he ruled out any possibility of infiltration across the border. He also said that further investigation will be launched in the morning as our forensic team has collected the samples from the site. A local resident Ram Lal Kalia who is living in the Sanyal village said that the blast created panic among the villagers.

Earlier last month, the Jammu and Kashmir Police claimed to have arrested two militant associates affiliated with the Jash-e-Mohammad outfit in south Kashnmir's Pulwama district, officials said. Police also claimed to have recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition from the arrested accused Jaish associates.

According to a Police spokesman, on specific input regarding the delivery of a consignment of weapons in Pulwama, a joint team comprising Pulwama Police and Army (55RR) was formed and deployed at different suspicious locations. At Naina Bhatpora jurisdiction of PS Litter, two Scooty-borne suspects were seen moving along with a consignment bag. The covert team swung into action and tactfully nabbed the duo and recovered the cache, the police spokesperson said.

A live grenade was recovered following a search of the area on Thursday morning. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Kathua, Shivdeep Singh Jamwal said. "One live grenade was seized around 6.30 am today. It points out that someone lobbed the grenade after detecting presence of security forces", he said. The SSP said prima facie it was an IED blast.

As the site of the blast is close to a police post, there is a possibility that the police post was the intended target. "It points out towards that. On Wednesday, our presence was more in this area, that is why they may have hurled grenade and after that they triggered IED blast", Jamwal said.
