UP accuses Punjab of not transferring Mukhtar Ansari to Ghazipur Jail

Uttar Pradesh government lashed out at Punjab in Supreme Court for not transferring Mukhtar Ansari to Ghazipur Jail. The top court was hearing a plea by the UP state to bring Ansari to UP as there are serious charges against him pending in the state.

New Delhi: The Uttar Pradesh government on Monday expressed frustration in the Supreme Court over Punjab not transferring Mukhtar Ansari to Ghazipur Jail. SG Tushar Mehta appearing for UP govt argued before the court that Punjab is supporting a 'terrorist' and is vociferously defending him.

The bench comprising of Justice Ashok Bhushan and Justice R Subhash Reddy was hearing a plea by the UP state to bring Ansari to UP as there are serious charges against him pending in the state. He has been remanded in Punjab for two years.

SG Mehta said that according to Punjab, Ansari is suffering from depression but actually he is enjoying in the Punjab jail. He added that Mukhtar had not even filed for bail.

Sr Adv Mukul Rohtagi countered saying that hearings are taking place through video conferencing. "You can not sit in a five-star accommodation for trial in UP. Please record the statement of Punjab that there is no urgency in the matter," said SG Mehta.

The court adjourned the matter for 24rth February.
