Bhopal: Three people admitted to hospital after chlorine gas leak

Following the gas leak, three people fell ill and were admitted to Hamidia Hospital after they complained of burning eyes and difficulty in breathing.

Bhopal: A chlorine gas leak was reported late at night on Wednesday in the Mother India Colony Police Station in the Shahjahanabad area here. Following the gas leak, three people fell ill and were admitted to Hamidia Hospital after they complained of burning eyes and difficulty in breathing. The residents in the area left the area and stayed away for over 3 hours in order to avoid harm.

As informed by Bhopal Collector Avinash Lavania, the leak was reported from a water filter plant of the Municipal Corporation located in the Idgah Hills area in the city. A chlorine gas tank is a pivotal part of this water plant. The leak is suspected to be because of the high chlorine content of the water in the tank, he added.

Further informing that the matter was responded to as soon as the first case of uneasiness was reported, Lavania said, "At around 6 pm, the first patient -- an elderly woman named Lakshmi -- started having serious breathing problems and eye irritation. A few other people had also complained of the same meanwhile. She was rushed to the hospital, while many other residents decided to leave the area until the issue is resolved." Three people in all are currently admitted to the Hamidia hospital here, receiving treatment.

Meanwhile, Municipal commissioner KVS Chaudhary Kolsani has reassured that the gas leak has been pacified and that the situation is under control as the Corporation staff was given immediate orders to solve the problem.
