6. SOUNDBITE (English) Harriet Chung, performer:
"I think when I was young I loved the romantic ideas in this work, but now I am living in the work. So every line, the lyrics, the whole libretto when I sing it, it's like pictures after pictures of happenings in Hong Kong passing through my mind when I sing the lyrics. So sometimes it's heartbreaking. Sometimes it's heartwarming and it just echoes with our emotions and experience now in real life, in a real sense."
7. Pan down from lyrics displayed on the ceiling to musicians performing
8. Audience members singing and wiping away tears
9. SOUNDBITE (English) Herman Tang, audience member:
"I think some of the words in the song echo the current situation in Hong Kong. For example, one of the last songs, 'Bring Him Home,' makes me think of those youngsters in Hong Kong Polytechnic (University)."

11. Close of pianist
12. SOUNDBITE (English) Harriet Chung, performer:
"When I'm singing the lyrics and there are pictures of protests, police violence, and the life we've lost, the brothers and sisters we lost in this movement, so it is a very emotional journey and I can feel that from the audience, too, and that is why we are trying to do this in every district in Hong Kong because in the first and the second performance, I can feel the audience's power and their need and their yearning for us to be singing together. So that is why we want to do this around Hong Kong."

STORYLINE:
For Hong Kong spectators emotionally and physically drained from protests that have convulsed the city, a rousing performance of "Les Miserables" proved almost too much to bear.
Audience members wept, dabbing their eyes with handkerchiefs, as a Hong Kong theater troupe belted out the rousing musical based on Victor Hugo's classic tale of rebellion in 19th-century France.
The aim of the performance was to bring comfort and new energy to the population, exhausted from months of confrontation with pro-Beijing authorities.
The crowd of several hundred joined with the troupe in singing "Do You Hear The People Sing?" - the stirring lyrics eloquently putting to words what many Hong Kong protesters feel.
Audience members said images from the protests flashed through their minds as they soaked up the free outdoor performance on Tuesday night.
The amateur troupe, dressed in black - which has become the color of protest in Hong Kong - was made up of volunteers who responded to an online appeal for singers and musicians.
Singer Harriet Chung said their aim was to perform the show in all 18 of Hong Kong's districts.
Tuesday's performance was the troupe's third, staged in a park in Tai Po in the New Territories that are north of Hong Kong Island and Kowloon and butt up against mainland China.
Chung said the musical is about "love and power and what you can do for love, for your ideals, for your ideas."
"That is why we want to pass this message to everyone in Hong Kong," she said.
With no costumes and minimalist lighting, the show lacks the big-ticket stagecraft of Hollywood, Broadway and London West End cousins but packs a powerful emotional punch in the febrile atmosphere of anti-government protest in Hong Kong.
Wiping away tears that welled behind his glasses, red-eyed spectator Herman Tang said the song "Bring Him Home" made him think of protesters who were trapped by a police siege at university campus last month.
Organizers made booklets of the lyrics, in Cantonese and English, for spectators to download onto their mobile phones, so they could sing along. Audience members waved lit phones in the air during songs, creating a tapestry of light.
