The cold wave has led to the partial freezing of Dal Lake while the rest of the parts are also reeling under intense cold. The low temperature has also led to the freezing of water pipes and taps at homes. Roads have also turned frosty due to which driving has become risky.

Srinagar: The cold wave continued in the valley with the temperature dropping to minus 8.4 degrees Celsius on Wednesday night marking the coldest night in the city in 30 years.

As per officials, Srinagar had recorded minus 8.3 degrees Celsius in 1995 while the temperature fell to minus 11.3 degrees Celsius in 1991.

Roads have also turned frosty due to which driving has become risky.

Kashmir is currently under the grip of 'Chillai-Kalan' - the 40-day harshest winter period when a cold wave grips the region and the temperature drops considerably.

While 'Chillai-Kalan' which began on December 21 will end on January 31, the cold wave continues even after that in Kashmir with a 20-day-long 'Chillai-Khurd' (small cold) and a 10-day-long 'Chillai-Bachha' (baby cold).

The weatherman has predicted dry weather for the next week.

The valley witnessed heavy snowfall last week due to which daily life continues to remain affected while the Jammu-national highway also remains shut for over a week now.
