Karnataka: Six elephants die in last 40 days

The death of six elephants in the last 40 days at Male Mahadeshwara Wildlife Sanctuary and Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary reflects the sorry state of their lives.

Chamarajanagar (Karnataka): At least six jumbos were found dead in the Male Mahadeshwara Wildlife Sanctuary and Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary limits in Karnataka's Chamarajanagar in the last 40 days.

According to sources, at least four elephants died in Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary while two jumbos died in Male Mahadeshwara Wildlife Sanctuary in the last 40 days.

According to Forest department officials, an elephant in Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary died after coming in contact with live electric wires and other jumbos were killed after falling into a trench near the Koudalli area.

"In Male Mahadeshwara Wildlife Sanctuary, a female jumbo slipped from a hillock to death while searching for water. The carcass was found there and the elephant is suspected to have died some days ago," the Forest department official said.

"Subsequently, a male elephant was found dead near the Namdhari Halla in Erakayam forest range. The post mortem report states that the jumbo died of multiple injuries due to the fall," the official added.
