Former CM Siddaramaih attacks K'taka govt over poor flood management

Former Chief Minister of Karnataka, Siddaramaiah on Thursday took to Twitter to attack the B S Yediyurappa government over the poor response to floods that inundated parts of Karnataka due to incessant monsoon downpours in the last few days.

"Rains have increased across the state for several days now, disrupting normal life. The government, who should be rushing to the aid of the people in distress, seems to have come to a standstill. Does the government exist in the state? Floods are a threat not only on the coast and Malanad but also in northern Karnataka. The state government should act promptly and provide the suffering people with meals and shelter," said Siddaramaiah.

Karnataka govt to release more funds if needed amid incessant rainfall: CM

The Karnataka government will release more funds if needed amid the incessant rainfall across the state.

Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa on Thursday directed the district in-charge ministers to take appropriate precautions in the face of increasing rainfall across the state.

The Chief Minister has also instructed district incharge ministers not to leave the constituency MLAs and officials and visit instructed to visit affected areas. He has been instructed to take other measures, including the distribution of relief on the spot, read the CMO statement.

"Already, Rs 50 crore has been released and if necessary, more money will be released by the Chief Ministers," it added.

On Wednesday, Yediyurappa asked the state chief secretary to take necessary steps in view of the rising rainfall in the state and gave instructions for releasing Rs 50 crore for emergencies.

Heavy monsoon rains in Karnataka caused landslides near Mudigere in the Chikmagalur district while different parts of the Kodagu district faced severe waterlogging and flood-like situations due to incessant heavy rainfall.

The Central Water Commission on Thursday said, "River Cauvery at Kudige in Kodagu district, Karnataka has crossed the danger level and is rising."

Landslide in Mudigere due to heavy rains

Heavy monsoon rains in Karnataka caused landslides near Mudigere in the Chikmagalur district, Annies Kanmani Joy, the Deputy Commissioner informed.

"A landslide occurred yesterday near Mudigere due to heavy rainfall. No loss of life or property has been reported so far," she told said.

Meanwhile, heavy rains lashed parts of the Udupi and Kodagu districts on Wednesday.

Visuals from Kodagu showed a flood-like situation, with houses and vehicles submerged under rainwater.

The India Meteorological Department tweeted earlier, "Isolated extremely heavy falls likely over Coastal Karnataka on August 5, 8 and 9, over South interior Karnataka on August 5."

IMD issues red alert for Coastal Karnataka

Bengaluru: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday issued a red alert in Malenadu and coastal areas of Karnataka.  

IMD has issued a red alert for in all the districts of coastal Karnataka which is likely to witness heavy to extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places, after which there is an orange alert in the region.

While South Interior Karnataka where heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected at places including Kodagu, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan and Shivamoga districts till Saturday. Parts of North interior Karnataka are also going to receive rainfall.

Revenue Minister R Ashok said that the respective district officials have been instructed to take necessary precautions to deal with the situation.

Red alert has been issued in Udupi, Uttara Kannada, Dakshina Kannada, Kodagu, Shimoga, Chikmagalur and Hassan districts, revenue minister said.

"I have contacted the DCs of 11 districts and instructed them to take precautionary measures. Some houses were damaged in Sringeri and Mudigere areas in Chikkamagaluru district. I have suggested providing compensation of Rs. 10,000 to families affected due to rain," he further said.

Addressing a video conference on July 25, the revenue minister said: "A Gram Panchayat Level Plan has been formulated. Necessary grants have been released to all districts. The outflow of Maharashtra reservoirs has created fear of flood in a few districts. NDRF teams have been sent to Kodagu, Dharwad, Belgaum and Dakshina Kannada districts."

Meanwhile, the weather forecast department has also predicted heavy rainfall warning in Wayanad and Kozhikode districts of Kerala.  

Monsoon is currently active to vigorous phase over Konkan coast and adjoining areas of West Coast, Eastern parts of India covering Odisha and West Bengal. Extremely heavy rainfall is expected in Gujarat from 4th to 6th of August, over Odisha on August 4 and over Chhattisgarh and East Madhya Pradesh on August 5.
