Rain, snowfall disrupt life in Kashmir

Rain lashed the plains while snow occurred in the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh on Sunday as the minimum temperature rose above the freezing point in Srinagar after over a week.

Srinagar: The Kashmir Valley received moderate rain and snowfall which began early Sunday morning today, plummeting the temperature down to sub-zero in hilly areas.

The rain and snow disrupted normal life as several highways including Srinagar-Leh, Gurez-Bandipora and Mugal road in Shopian were closed for traffic due to snow accumulation.

According to MeT official, snowfall and rain will continue intermittently till December 6 afternoon with the peak activity today.

The snowfall was received in hilly areas of Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Kupwara, Sonmarg, Shopian while plain areas of Srinagar, Anantnag, Pulwama received moderate rainfall.

“Some places on higher reaches may receive heavy snowfall on December 5. Light to moderate rain is also likely to occur at most places of the Jammu region,” the official said.

According to MeT official, Srinagar recorded night temperature of minus 0.7 degrees Celsius.

“Qazigund recorded minimum temperature of minus 0.4 degrees Celsius, Pahalgam recorded a low of minus 2.0 degrees Celsius and Kokernag in south Kashmir recorded a low of minus 2.3 degrees Celsius as against minus 1.1°C on previous night. Kupwara town recorded a low of minus 1.3 degrees Celsius,” he said.

Gulmarg, the world famous ski resort in north Kashmir, recorded a minimum of minus 1.2 degrees Celsius as against minus 1.0 degrees Celsius of the previous night.

Light Rain/Snow is most likely to continue till the next 12-18 hours. There is no forecast of any major snowfall," the official said.

The weatherman said that there would be overall improvement most likely from Monday onwards.
