Basavaraj Bommai joins the father-son duo club to occupy CM's chair

The BJP Parliamentary Board following a meeting with its legislature party has chosen Basavaraj Bommai as the new Karnataka CM. Bommai is all set to take oath at 11 am today. On Tuesday night, Bommai met Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot and had claimed the stake to form the government and will succeed BS Yediyurappa as the CM. He also joins the elite list of those father-son duo who have taken charge of different states.

New Delhi: Basavaraj Bommai has been elected the leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) legislature party in Karnataka on Tuesday. With this, his path to become the Chief Minister of Karnataka has been cleared and he will be taking oath at 11 am on Wednesday. With this Bommai is the latest entrant to join the elite list of those father-son duo who have taken charge of different states.

Basavaraj Bommai is a Lingayat MLA from northern Karnataka, and is the son of SR Bommai who had served as the former Chief Minister of Karnataka from 1988 to 1989. Bommai (61) had earlier held the portfolios of Home, Law, Parliamentary and Legislative Affairs in the government led by former Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa.

Haradanahalli Doddegowda Deve Gowda, the former Prime Minister of India( 1 June 1996 to 21 April 1997) was previously the 14th Chief Minister of Karnataka from 1994 to 1996. He is currently a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha representing Karnataka. His son, Haradanahalli Devegowda Kumaraswamy, a businessman had also served as the 18th Chief Minister of Karnataka from 23 May 2018 to 23 July 2019.

Muthuvel Karunanidhi, served as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for almost two decades over 5 terms between 1969 and 2011. He was also known as 'Kalaignar' (Artist) and 'Mutthamizh Arignar (Tamil Scholar) for his contributions to Tamil literature. His son, Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin is currently serving as the 8th Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and is also the president of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) since 28 August 2018.

Late Yeduguri Sandinti Rajasekhara Reddy, known as YSR, was the 14th Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh from 2004 to 2009. His son, Yeduguri Sandinti Jagan Mohan Reddy, known as Y. S. Jagan, is serving as the 17th and current CM of Andhra Pradesh since 2019. He is also the founder and president of YSR Congress Party.

Naveen Patnaik, the current Chief Minister of Odisha, is the son of former Chief Minister Biju Patnaik who had served two terms (23 June 1961 – 2 October 1963 & 5 March 1990 – 15 March 1995). In the year 1997, Naveen Patnaik stepped into politics after the death of his father and a year later founded the Biju Janata Dal in the name of his father Biju Patnaik. The Biju Janata Dal then won the assembly elections and formed the government in coalition with the BJP. Naveen Patnaik is the longest-serving chief minister of Odisha and as of 2021, one of the longest-serving CMs of an Indian state, holding the post for over 20 years, and is the only third Indian chief Minister after Pawan Chamling and Jyoti Basu to win 5 consecutive terms as Chief Minister of an Indian state.

Shibu Soren had thrice served as the CM of Jharkhand, first in 2005 for 10 days, then from 2008 to 2009 and again from 2009 to 2010. He was sworn in as the 3rd CM of the state on 30 December 2009 after winning the Jharkhand Assembly elections. His son, Hemant Soren is the current Chief Minister of Jharkhand and had earlier served as the CM from July 2013 to December 2014. He is also the president of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM).

Purno Agitok Sangma had served as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha from 1996 to 1998 and Chief Minister of Meghalaya from 1988 to 1990. His son, Conrad Kongkal Sangma is the current Meghalaya CM and member of Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, he assumed office on 6 March 2018.

Dorjee Khandu served as the 6th Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh and had died in a helicopter accident on 30 April 2011 on a constituency visit to Tawang. His eldest son, Pema Khandu is the present Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh having assumed office since 2016.

Mulayam Singh Yadav, the founder-patron of the Samajwadi Party had served for three non-consecutive terms as the 15th Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh from 5 December 1989 – 24 June 1991, 5 December 1993 – 3 June 1995 and 29 August 2003 – 13 May 2007. His son, Akhilesh Yadav had served as the 20th Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh from 2012 to 2017, having assumed office on 15 March 2012 at the age of 38.

The name of the Abdullah family of Jammu and Kashmir is also included in this list. Three generations of the Abdullah family got the privilege of becoming the Chief Minister. Firstly, Sheikh Abdullah had served as the 1st elected Prime Minister of the Princely State of Jammu and Kashmir and was later jailed and exiled, later he went onto to become the 3rd CM of the state. After him, his son Farooq Abdullah became the 4th CM and then his son Omar Abdullah became the 11th and the youngest CM of J&K, after forming a government in coalition with the Congress party, on 5 January 2009.

Shankarrao Bhavrao Chavan had served twice as the Maharashtra CM from 1975 until 1977 and from 13 March 1986 until 26 June 1988. His son, Ashok Shankarrao Chavan had served as the 16th Chief Minister of Maharashtra state from 8 December 2008 to 9 November 2010.

Chaudhary Devi Lal emerged as farmer leader from the state of Haryana, and served as the Chief Minister of Haryana first in 1977-79 and then in 1987-89. His son, Om Prakash Chautala had served as the 8th CM of Haryana.
