Tezpur (Assam): A hardcore ULFA(I) militant, who was allegedly involved in the abduction of three ONGC employees last month, has surrendered before the Spear Corps, Defence PRO, Guwahati, said on Monday.

Concerted efforts of Tuensang Battalion of the Inspector General Assam Rifles (North) under Spear Corps to convince the insurgent cadres to rejoin the mainstream bore fruit as the ULFA(I) militant surrendered on the Indo-Myanmar Border in Mon district while he was returning from Myanmar.

His surrender will motivate other cadres of the region to return to the mainstream, security forces believe.

The militant is also believed to have revealed to the forces that the abducted ONGC employee, who goes by the same name as him, is still in ULFA(I)'s custody. Three ONGC employees — Ritul Saikia, Mohini Mohan Gogoi (both junior engineer assistants) and Alakesh Saikia (junior technician) — were allegedly abducted by ULFA(I) in the third week of April. Mohan and Gogoi have been released while Saikia's whereabout's are not known.

The militant reportedly confessed to the forces that he had a difficult life with ULFA (I) and appealed to his 'comrades' to shun violence.
