Djokovic, Biles win Laureus sports awards of the year

Monaco: World No. 1 tennis player Novak Djokovic has bagged 2019 Laureus World Sportsman of the year award. The Serbian has bagged two grand slam titles since he recovered from elbow surgery.

Meanwhile, American-Candian gymnast Simone Biles, who dominated the world championship last year, has won Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year title.

Yuwa, a Jharkhand-based NGO which works for girl empowerment, clinched the Laureus Sport for Good award, becoming the third Indian entry to bag the honour.

The year 2018 was a comeback year for the Serbian as he returned to professional court only after recovering from elbow surgery. He did not let his fans down as he clinched Wimbledon and the U.S Open in 2018 which was followed by his Australian Open win in January 2019.

The 31-year old also reclaimed top spot in the WTA rankings in the process.

This was the fourth time Djokovic won the award beating the likes of France's World Cup winning striker Kylian Mbappe and NBA superstar LeBron James.

Talking about the tough time, which he sustained owing to an elbow injury, Djokovic said, "I did think about leaving tennis. I did not find myself in a good balance. It took me several months to find that purpose and meaning again. This award reflects and symbolises this journey."

American gymnast, Simone Biles has recently become all-time leading world gymnastics championship gold medal winner with record 14 gold hauls. Overall, she has 20 medals in her kitty till date.

France, who won FIFA World Cup 2018, became the first national football team to win second Laureus World Team of the Year Award. Coach Didier Deschamps received the award on behalf of the team.

American Golfer Tiger Woods won the Comeback award as he demonstrated phenomenal performance after undergoing four back surgeries in a span of over three years. The 14-time major champion claimed his first win in 1,876 days at the US PGA Tour Championship.
