Manchester: Former England batsman John Edrich has died at the age of 83 at his home in Scotland.

Considered one of the best batsmen of his generation, Edrich played 77 Tests for England, making his debut against the West Indies at Old Trafford on June 6th 1963.

His final Test was also against the West Indies at Old Trafford almost exactly 13 years later.

Including first-class cricket, his career spanned three decades and saw the introduction of the limited-overs game, in which he played seven one-day internationals before his retirement.

Edrich scored 5,138 runs at an average of 43.54. In ODIs, he scores 223 runs with an average of 37.16.

Edrich was given seven years to live in 2000 when he was diagnosed with leukaemia. However, he lived long past that prediction, claiming injections of mistletoe helped him battle the disease.
