New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday ordered to form a committee to study the quality and quantity of water at the Wazirabad treatment plant in Delhi which is critical to meet the water requirements of the national capital.

A bench headed by Justice L Nageswara Rao gave the order after Haryana and Delhi traded allegations regarding the quantity and quality of water supplied from Haryana.

The committee will consist of the Secretary and Joint Secretary of Jal Shakti Ministry, member of Delhi Pollution Control Board (DPCB), member of Delhi Jal Board, member of Haryana Pollution Board and Haryana Agricultural Board. It will be chaired by the Secretary of Jal Shakti ministry.

The Court was hearing a plea by Delhi Jal Board alleging a spike in Ammonia levels in the water which is supplied to Delhi from Haryana.

Haryana contended before the court that the water level is the same as it was back in 2017 when the inspection was carried out by the Upper Yamuna River Board and in case of pollutants, NGT was approached where it was amicably decided for chief secretaries to sort the matter out. It further said that water level decreased because water lands into Wazirabad plants and other plants too.

The Court added that the case will be heard again on April 30.
