Raipur: Chhattisgarh government in a bid to boost traditional medicine and reduce the dependence of people on modern medicines has taken a major decision to encourage Vaidyas. A trial initiative has already been undertaken by the government to provide a huge platform to these physicians in rural areas and soon a formal launch will be announced. Around 45 Vaidyas from across the state have been empanelled by the State Medicinal Plants Board for the initiative.

Currently, these Vaidyas reside in different districts of the state and visit Raipur on a three-day basis. A counselling centre at Pandri has also been developed for this purpose, wherein patients are provided medicines. In addition to this, the patients are also counselled about their issues. The trial run is receiving a good response from the people.

Why traditional medicine?

The CEO of Chhattisgarh Medicinal Plants Board says that the state is fortunate to have plants having medicinal properties in abundance and that only people living in rural and forest areas know how to use these medicines. Hence, the government through this initiative is trying to help people avail themselves of the health benefits of traditional medicine which is safe in every manner. Also, the move is set to benefit traditional doctors in a big way.

Apart from Vaidyas (traditional doctors), the government is also deputing expert practitioners of Ayurveda to these counselling centres to provide better treatment for patients.

Chhattisgarh government has chosen several traditional doctors from different forest divisions, who are experts in treating several diseases. Also, there are gynaecology experts to help treat pregnant women. Some of these medicines are also made from very rare herbs.

At present, the government is making arrangements for the travel and accommodation of Vaidyas.

The government's decision is laudable, but challenges exist

This decision of the Chhattisgarh government to promote Vaidyas is not without its challenges. Questions have been raised on treatments using traditional medicine. Especially, there have been instances of people being cheated in the name of traditional medicine. In this context, it needs to be seen how the government's efforts will not only help in promoting traditional medicines but also avoid quacks from using it to fool people.
