Five anti-CAA protesters killed, 28 injured since Dec 11

As many as five protesters have been killed, while 28 have sustained injuries, due to police firing in Assam since protests over CAA broke out in the state, sources close to the police administration told ETV Bharat.

The deceased have been identified as Dipanjal Das hailing from Chaygaon, Sam Stafford, a class 10 student of Hatigaon area in Guwahati, Iswar Nayak hailing from Udalguri district, Abdul Alim hailing from Barpeta and Sanjeeb Deka hailing from Nalbari district. 

Altogether 1,406 persons have been detained and 175 arrests were made by the Assam Police on charges of rioting.

Those arrested include peasant leader Akhil Gogoi and United Liberation Front of Asom pro-talks leader Jiten Dutta.

Kamal Hassan's MNM moves SC against CAA

Actor Kamal Haasan-led Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) on Monday filed a plea in the Supreme Court against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA).

The MNM, in its petition, said that the amendment gives special protection to religious minorities only and excludes linguistic minorities, which is "unconstitutional".

"The petitioner -- MNM -- is aggrieved by the recent passing of the present Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, as the same allowed a selective and arbitrary basis for granting Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 to illegal migrants on the basis of their religion," it further reads.

It sought "appropriate order/direction on the issue" by the apex court.

Calcutta HC asks WB govt to file report on action taken against violence

The Calcutta HC directed the state government on Monday to file a report on action taken
regarding law and order situation in West Bengal, amid violent protests against the citizenship law.

A division bench of Chief Justice TBN Radhakrishnan and Justice H Bhattacharyya gave the directions on a petition filed by a resident of Howrah that has seen several incidents of vandalism and arson.

The court has directed the government to file the report by December 18 when the matter will be heard next.

Congress' student wing lay siege to railway station in Kerala

In Palakkad district of Kerala, Congress activists led by MLA Shafi Parambil, laid a seige to the district railway station.

Students outfits, including Kerala Students Union (KSU) of the opposition Congress, blocked trains at various places including Kozhikode, Thalassery, Kannur, and Palakkad on Sunday night against the police action.

DYFI members squat on rail tracks, block trains in Kerala

Activists of DYFI, the youth wing of the ruling CPI(M), squatted on the railway tracks at Thiruvalla and Kollam and blocked trains on Monday protesting the police action on students of Jamia Millia University in Delhi.

While the protesters blocked the Velankani-Ernakulam express for 13 minutes at the Thiruvalla railway station in Pathnamthitta district, the Island express was blocked at the Kollam station, railway.

The activists, who squatted on the tracks, were later arrested and removed.

Amended citizenship law 'impractical', Centre should repeal it, says Ashok Gehlot

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Monday said the amended Citizenship Act is "impractical" and therefore it cannot be implemented.

He alleged that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government has failed to deliver on real issues and is doing politics in the name of religion and not on the basis of issues.

"It is impractical and therefore it cannot be implemented. Six-seven states have said this. The government should repeal it," Gehlot said at a press conference here.

When asked whether the Rajasthan government will implement the amended citizenship law, the chief minister said, "I have said that it is impractical."

Students of IISc-Bengaluru join anti-CAA protest 

Students at the prestigious Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, joined the protest across campuses in the country on Monday against the police crackdown in Jamia Millia Islamia and Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).

A poster issued by IISc students read, "call for a protest gathering at the public university most dear to successive Indian governments of the country."

"We refuse to work when we no longer know what we are working for. To work in this climate for a government that not only threatens us with de-citizenship but also dehumanises us when we try to raise our voice is to submit ourselves to enslavement," a student leading the protest said.

Assam Police thanked the people of the state for following the spirit of the law as the situation in the state has improved immensely. Meanwhile, night curfew would continue to start from 9 pm on Monday till 6 am on Tuesday.

MANUU urges postponement of exams following call for boycott over CAA

Protestors agitating against the amended Citizenship Act have boycotted their examinations in solidarity with  Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) students who have been facing police brutality in the national capital. 

On Monday, Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) students' union has written to the controller of examination of university requesting to postpone the examinations. MANUU in a letter stated that  MANUU students are boycotting their exams to mark their protest against police's attack on Jamia and AMU students.

Citizenship Amendment Act protest at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) on Munday turned violent following University shutdown till January 5.

Mobile internet services have also been suspended in Aligarh and Saharanpur till further notice as Uttar Pradesh government has put the state on high alert.

At least 50 people have been injured, including DIG and city SP in stone-pelting and firing incident between police and AMU students.

Students also held a demonstration outside Nadwa College in state capital Lucknow.

A security alert has been issued in Bareilly, Kasganj and Bulandshahr and section 144 has been imposed in many parts of the state to maintain law and order.

A protest march was taken out in Chhattisgarh capital Raipur against the "divisive" amended citizenship law which grants Indian citizenship to non-Muslim migrants fleeing religious persecution from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan. The protest was held under the banner of the "Anti-CAB Agitation Forum" from Marine Drive area to Ambedkar Chowk in evening.

The protesters, holding placards, raised slogans and took pledge of the preamble of the Constitution in Ambedkar chowk.

A large number of people gathered under the banner of Muslim Service Organisation in Dehradun on Sunday and marched in protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) 2019.

"The CAA is not acceptable at any cost. The government should immediately take back this decision. We will also conduct a padayatra from Dehradun to the Jantar Mantar in New Delhi," said Saddam Qureshi, general secretary of the Muslim Service Organisation.

India protests CAA: Kamal Hassan's MNM moves SC against CAA

New Delhi: Protests over the amended Citizenship Act continued in various parts of the country on Sunday as sporadic incidents of violence were reported from Delhi, West Bengal and Bihar.

The CAA has triggering widespread debates on citizenship and the constitutional validity of the Act.

The CAA seeks to grant Indian citizenship to refugees from Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Parsi and Christian communities fleeing religious persecution from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh and who entered India on or before December 31, 2014.

The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill was passed from both the Houses of Parliament earlier this week and became an Act with President Ram Nath Kovind giving his assent to it on November 12.
