Guwahati: The Assam Public Works (APW), the original petitioner in the Supreme Court which led to the updation of the National Register of Citizens, filed fresh petitions in the apex court seeking the formation of a high-level community to look into the anomalies and demanding re-verification of the NRC.

The NGO also wondered whether the software used in the updation exercise was capable to handle so much data and if it was examined by any third party Information Technology expert.

"The SC gave an order saying NRC will only be completed after the judgments in two cases, which are with the constitution bench. We are requesting the SC to stop the NRC process till then," Sharma said.

"We also requested the SC to form a high-level community to look into the anomalies and give an order for CBI, NIA and ED enquiry to book the culprits behind the NRC process," Sharma added.

The APW also accused the IT companies and the state NRC coordinator, involved in the NRC process, of corruption.

All data of the final list of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) has been made offline from its official website due to non-renewal of the contract with the IT firm Wipro.

In 2009, the APW filed a petition in the Supreme Court praying that names of 41 lakh foreigners be deleted from the electoral rolls of Assam and the NRC updated. In response to the petition, the Centre told the apex court that the 1951 NRC was being updated.

The Supreme Court in 2013 took up the APW petition and directed both the Central and state governments to begin the process for updating the NRC and the actual work began two years later.

The NRC which validates bonafide Indian citizens of Assam was updated under the monitoring of the Supreme Court. The final list excluding 19 lakh people was published on August 31 last year.

Several political parties and organisations have alleged that many illegal immigrants were able to get their names included in the document while a large number of genuine Indians were excluded.
