New farm laws will empower farmers: BJP Kisan Morcha national chief

BJP's Kisan Morcha national president Rajkumar Chahar on Tuesday launched a scathing attack on the opposition, saying they were "misleading" the farmers due to political considerations.

He said the farm laws were meant to set farmers free from restrictions which they had suffered for decades.

"These laws are meant to empower farmers and set them free from restrictions...But some political outfits, especially the Congress, are opposing the reforms and misleading the farmers due to political considerations," Chahar told a news conference.

Earlier, he took part in a 'tractor rally' organised here by the city unit of the BJP in support of the farm laws.

Attacking the Congress, he said, "It is laughable that the party is opposing the three laws, which had in their election manifesto talked of open markets."

"In Punjab too before the 2017 polls, the Congress party had talked about bringing some changes, but now they are trying to mislead the farmers. But I want to say that the falsehood they are trying to spread is like smoke which will not last for long."

Opposition parties creating fear among farmers over new farm laws: Jitendra Singh

Union Minister Jitendra Singh on Tuesday accused the opposition parties of taking up "imaginary issues to create a false fear" among farmers and trying to "mislead" them over the new farm reform laws.

The irony is that while the common farmers are satisfied and have no apprehension, it is some politically motivated interests which have no knowledge or stake in farming that are attempting to make an issue out of it by trying to mislead the farmers, he alleged.

"It is in the interest of the farming community of India and common people at large, that all like-minded people should come out and vociferously dispel the disinformation and the malicious campaign launched by self-seeking elements," said Singh, the Minister of State for Personnel.

He launched a campaign from his Lok Sabha constituency of Udhampur in Jammu and Kashmir in support of the farm laws brought in by the Narendra Modi government, and against "disinformation being spread by the Congress".

Six of the PYC activists were arrested on Monday and police had also seized two vehicles in the matter. Police had said that around 20 people carried a tractor on a truck to Rajpath, Man Singh Crossing, unloaded it from the truck and set it on fire.

Oppn insulting farmers by burning farm equipment: Modi

In the wake of protests by farmers and various opposition parties against three new agriculture-related laws, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Tuesday that those burning farm equipment to show their anger were 'insulting farmers'.

The opposition was insulting farmers by their action of setting fire to machinery and equipment that were 'worshipped' by agriculturists, the Prime Minister said while inaugurating six projects under the 'Namami Gange' project to treat sewage in Uttarakhand.

"It has been done by our NDA government as per the MS Swaminathan Commission recommendations," the Prime Minister said.

He accused the opposition, without naming anyone, of 'misleading the farmers over the MSP issue' and reiterated that the MSP would remain even as the farmers would get the freedom to sell their produce anywhere they wished to.

"Some persons are unable to tolerate this freedom (of farmers). One more way for them to earn black money has ended," Modi remarked.

Chairing a meeting with the representatives of 31 farmers' unions to take their views on the matter, the chief minister said he would be discussing the issue with his legal team later in the day to finalise the next steps, including challenging the farm laws in the Supreme Court.

Goa Cong protests against Centre's farm legislations

Panaji (Goa): The Goa Congress on Monday held a protest at Raj Bhavan against the Centre's farm bills which were cleared by Parliament recently and got the president's assent.

Senior leaders like LoP Digambar Kamat and state unit chief Girish Chodankar took part in the protest, with the former stating that the Centre must withdraw them as they are anti-farmer.

Chodankar said the legislations would help "crony capitalist" friends of the Narendra Modi government.

The prime minister wants to save Rs 1 lakh crore that would have to be given as MSP to procure produce from farmers, he alleged.

Farmers' protest: 'Rail roko' in Amritsar enters sixth day

The protesters wore black clothes

Amritsar (Punjab): Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee on Monday continued its 'rail roko' agitation in Devidaspura village in Punjab's Amritsar for the sixth consecutive day against the new farm laws.

The protesters under the banner of Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee, have blocked the railway tracks by putting up a tent on the railway lines at Devidaspura, and are wearing black clothes in protest against the new laws.

Raising anti-government slogans, the protesters demanded the rollback of the farm Bills which were passed by the Parliament.

Similar protests against the farm legislations have been witnessed in various parts of the country including Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Odisha.

The Parliament recently passed The Farmers' Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill, 2020, and the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill, 2020, and The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill, 2020.

According to the Centre, these Bills will help small and marginal farmers by allowing them to sell produce outside 'mandis' and sign agreements with agri-business firms and doing away with stock-holding limits on key commodities.
