A lot of rumours have been spreading related to the novel coronavirus, its prevention and treatments through social media and word of mouth. But not every rumour is true, unless it is backed by a fact. However, in these difficult times, it is better to follow the instructions by the known health and government authorities, than believing in what the general public says. Therefore, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has been continuously working on the Myth-Busters and here are some common myths that people tend to believe in.

  1. Can prolonged use of masks cause oxygen deficiency?
NO. Wearing masks for long hours continuously can be uncomfortable, especially when you are not used to wearing it at all. But, it does not lead to CO2 intoxication or oxygen deficiency. “While wearing a medical mask, make sure it fits properly and that it is tight enough to allow you to breathe normally. Do not reuse a disposable mask and always change it as soon as it gets damp”.
  2. Most people can recover from COVID-19.
YES. “Most people who get COVID-19 have mild or moderate symptoms and can recover thanks to supportive care”. Therefore, if you witness any symptoms like cough, fever or difficulty in breathing, seek medical help early. Also, people in the high risk group along with all others must take proper precautions, because ‘Prevention is better than cure’.
  3. Drinking alcohol protects from COVID-19?
NO. Drinking alcohol does not protect you from COVID-19 and can be dangerous to health. It can also increase the risk of other health problems or make them worse.
  4. Eating garlic can prevent the infection.
“Garlic is a healthy food that may have some antimicrobial properties. However, there is no evidence from the current outbreak that eating garlic has protected people from the new coronavirus”.
  5. Only old people can get infected easily with the virus.
NO. Not only the old people or the ones in the higher risk group, but people of all ages can get infected with the COVID-19 virus. The only way to keep safe is by following the preventive measures.

Therefore, the only way out of this disease is to follow the precautions advised by the authorities and prevent ourselves from getting infected. Not spreading rumours is another way in which you can contribute to #IndiaFightsCorona.
