AASU, NESO to continue anti-CAA agitation

The All Assam Students Union (AASU) and North East Student Organisation (NESO) reiterated to continue its anti-Citizenship Amendment Act agitation across the state. The apex court has also issued a notice to the Centre asking it to respond to 59 petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the law.

New Delhi: The All Assam Students Union (AASU) and North East Student Organisation (NESO) on Wednesday reiterated to continue its anti-Citizenship Amendment Act agitation across the state as the Supreme Court has also asked for a detailed report from the Centre on the Act.

"We will continue our agitation against the anti-people act. The government can't impose anything at their whims on us. Today's directive issued by the Supreme Court is a victory for us. At least, the court has asked the government to let it know the real intention behind bringing the Act," said AASU president Dipankar Nath while talking to ETV Bharat.

Nath was referring to the Supreme Court's directives issued to the Centre over CAA.

The apex court also issued a notice to the Centre asking it to respond to 59 petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the law. The court, however, refused to stay on the operation of the new provision for granting citizenship to members of persecuted minorities in Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The bench comprising Chief Justice of India Sharad Arvind Bobde, Justice BR Gavai and Justice Surya Kant has asked for its report before January 22 when the case will again be raised for hearing.

"We are expecting that the court will give a verdict in our favour...the CAA is against the basic principle of historic Assam Accord," said Basanta Deka, a retired professor of Handique College in Guwahati. Deka was associated with the anti-CAA agitation.

Taking about the court's directives, Padum Rajkhowa, General Secretary of Assam Sahitya Sabha (ASS) told ETV Bharat that this Act will minimise the numbers of indigenous people of Assam.

"This Act is anti-people. We will never allow the government to implement the Act in Assam. We will continue our movement," said Rajkhowa.

It is to be noted that the ASS is an Assam based literary organisation aims to promote Assamese culture and literature. Ever since the Citizenship Amendment Act has come to the fore, Sahitya Sabha too initiated its move to oppose the Act.
