Rayadurgam, a small town 100 kilometres east of Anantpur, is seeing a peculiar rise in the demand for donkeys. It was a washerman who set off the trend by buying a donkey when the price of petrol touched Rs. 100 per litre.

Rayadurgam (Andhra Pradesh): Rising fuel prices, especially petrol, has been largely disconcerting for a major chunk of the population in the country in which over 80 per cent fall in the low-income strata. Rayadurgam, a small town 100 kilometres east of Anantpur, is seeing a peculiar rise in the demand for donkeys. It was a washerman who set off the trend by buying a donkey when the price of petrol touched Rs. 100 per litre.

Washerman's logic to beat petrol price propels demand for donkeys

The hardworking man was forced to shell out nearly 50 percent of his daily earning on a litre of petrol till recently when he was dependent on his two-wheeler to collect and deliver clothes. But the man set a new trend by investing in a donkey and cart for Rs. 26,000. Now with the local people having taken a cue from the washerman's logic, the demand for donkey has skyrocketed in this small town. With petrol prices soaring above Rs. 100, the washermen's community in Rayadurgam is appealing to the state government to make provision for the procurement of donkeys at reasonable prices.
