New Delhi: India registered a huge increase in the daily Covid-19 cases logging 1.94 lakh infections in the last 24 hours, 25,000 (15.8%) more than what was recorded a day earlier.

The number of active cases in the country has reached 9.55 lakh (highest in 211 days) even though over 60,00 people have recovered during the last 24 hours. The daily positivity rate (the number of people infected per 100 tests) has shot up to 11.5 per cent, according to the official data released Wednesday morning. The Omicron tally has reached 4,868 with Maharashtra recording the most 1,281 cases of the new variant. Experts however say the number of Omicron cases can be a lot higher in the country as the current wave is being driven by this highly infectious variant.

Wednesday's cases have pushed the total Cotally of Covid-19 cases to 3,60,70,510. The active cases increased to 9,55,319, the highest in 211 days, while the death toll climbed to 4,84,655 with 442 fresh fatalities, the data updated at 8 am stated.

India's Covid-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 2020, 30 lakh on August 23, 40 lakh on September 5 and 50 lakh on September 16. It went past 60 lakh on September 28, 70 lakh on October 11, crossed 80 lakh on October 29, 90 lakh on November 20 and surpassed the one-crore mark on December 19. India crossed the grim milestone of two crores on May 4 and three crores on June 23.
