1. SOUNDBITE (English) Anne Sebba, Historian and author who has written about Wallis Simpson, whose relationship with King Edward VIII led to his abdication:
"I absolutely see why it's irresistible to make these comparisons. Here was an American woman who suddenly shot into the consciousness, snatching away this wonderful, handsome Prince of Wales that everybody adored. Who on earth was she and what was the hold she had on him, which ultimately led to his abdication and giving up the throne? So, of course, everybody blamed her. And this seemed to be such a crisis of the monarchy and a constitutional crisis. And now we have Harry, who also is much loved and adored. And this American woman, also divorced, suddenly comes on the scene. What is her hold over him that suddenly makes him want to leave the country? There are similarities."

2. SOUNDBITE (English) Anne Sebba, Historian and author who has written about Wallis Simpson, whose relationship with King Edward VIII led to his abdication:
"That's a big similarity between the two stories. Both men actually decided that their lives would be better not having royal responsibility but with the women they loved. And in both cases, Edward and Harry, this was driven by love for the women they married and how they could be respected. Don't forget in 1937, when eventually Edward married Wallace, she was only given the title of Duchess of Windsor without HRH (Her Royal Highness). So as far as Edward was concerned, his wife had really been humiliated and he would not bring her back to England. So effectively, they were always exiles because he thought if he brought her back to England she wouldn't be curtsied to because she didn't have the royal title. Now, that's not quite the same as as is happening with Harry and Meghan. At least the royal family are not removing their HRH titles, but they don't mean the same thing these days. So as far as Harry's concerned, he's protecting Meghan just in the same way as Edward was protecting Wallace. But they will have their HRH titles if they wanted to use them, but they don't mean what they did in 1936, 37."

3. SOUNDBITE (English) Anne Sebba, Historian and author who has written about Wallis Simpson, whose relationship with King Edward VIII led to his abdication:
"Well, here we have a huge similarity. Ultimately, this is a family tragedy. That's why everybody is so engrossed in this story, because it could happen to our family. It just happens it's the royal family. But we see them as a projection of us only writ large. So this is ultimately a very sad family story where two brothers have obviously had serious and deep arguments. And how they work it out I think it's not totally clear yet. Obviously, Harry will go to Canada and let's see how the story runs."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Anne Sebba, Historian and author who has written about Wallis Simpson, whose relationship with King Edward VIII led to his abdication:
"I think being an American divorcee was really the least of her problems. I think she was a very clever, established actress and she didn't want to give up her career. She didn't want to give up all her causes. She was very involved in the world. She had a job. She had a role to play. I think the real difficulty was that Meghan was super intelligent and had a lot to give and felt frustrated that she couldn't actually do her work and and carry on the sort of life she'd had. I think being American really didn't matter. And I think being divorced really didn't matter."

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Anne Sebba, Historian and author who has written about Wallis Simpson, whose relationship with King Edward VIII led to his abdication:
"But perhaps they'll be able to use all their talents and expertise and experience better by being one removed. When all is said and done, Harry was not first in line to the throne. He was never going to be king. So actually, by stepping back a bit and having more of a quiet family life without the intrusive media attention, they might actually develop a role. I think we don't quite know how this story is going to end."

STORYLINE:
A British historian on Monday said that it was "irresistible" to compare the Duchess of Sussex to Wallis Simpson, the American for whom Pince Harry's great-great-uncle Edward gave up the throne almost a hundred years ago.
Anne Sebba said that "big similarity between the two stories" included that both King Edward VIII and Prince Harry chose to step back from royal responsibilities out of love for the women they married - both American divorcees.
Sebba added, however, that in her view neither being American, nor having been previously married, mattered for Meghan Markle in the way it did in 1936 for Wallis Simpson.
She also said that she thought part of the public's fascination with the subject stemmed from the impression that at its core this was a "family tragedy" as it could happen in other families.
On Sunday Harry said that he had "no other option'' but to step away so that he and his wife, Meghan, could seek a more peaceful life" in a personal speech that referenced his late mother, Princess Diana, who died in a car accident in 1997 while being pursued by paparazzi.
The comments were Harry’s first public remarks since Saturday night, when his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, announced the terms under which the prince and his wife will walk away from most royal duties, give up public funding and try to become financially independent.
The queen's statement said the agreement, reached after crisis talks among the top royals and their staff, was a “constructive and supportive way forward."
The conditions represent a starker break with the monarchy than Harry and Meghan had envisioned when they announced on Instagram that they planned to “step back” from royal duties.
