3. SOUNDBITE (English) Simon Coveney, Irish Foreign Affairs Minister:
"Of course in the meantime, we need to see ratification of the withdrawal agreement in the European Parliament and the UK actually exiting the EU which obviously everyone expects will happen now in a few weeks' time. But I think because of the decisions that the British Prime Minister (Boris Johnson) has made, time is going to be very short. We have a lot to do and not very much time to do it. And so that is why I think the mandate and the approach that the EU will take is important."

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Simon Coveney, Irish Foreign Affairs Minister:
"The other thing that is very important from an Irish perspective is the full implementation of the withdrawal agreement and the protocol on Ireland and Northern Ireland. Because regardless of the future relationship, regardless of the potential for a future trade deal, the relationships on the island of Ireland, the guarantees that have been provided to prevent border infrastructure being necessary between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland requires that new structures are put in place, new committees are put in place in terms of managing the trade relationship between Great Britain and Northern Ireland."

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Simon Coveney, Irish Foreign Affairs Minister:
"So those structures need to be put in place in parallel with progressing the negotiations and discussions on a future relationship and a future trade deal. And from an Irish perspective that is really important for obvious reasons."

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Simon Coveney, Irish Foreign Affairs Minister:
"So there is no way that the EU will ever sign up to a trade deal that allows tariff free, quota free, and frictionless access to the EU goods coming into...the UK goods coming into the EU if there isn't a level playing field in terms of how they are produced. Because that would be unfair competition. But that is all going to be part of the negotiation that we move into after the UK actually leaves the European Union."

STORYLINE:
The Irish Foreign Minister on Monday met with the EU's chief Brexit negotiator in Brussels, less than two weeks before the UK is set to leave the bloc.
Simon Coveney stressed the importance that "guarantees that have been provided to prevent border infrastructure" on the island of Ireland needed to be implemented in parallel with the process of negotiating a post-Brexit deal.
Britain is expected to officially leave the European Union on Jan. 31 after a debilitating political period that has bitterly divided the nation since the 2016 Brexit referendum.
Two days before the exit, on 29 January, the EU legislature will vote on Brexit.
Difficult negotiations setting out the new relationship between Britain and its European neighbours will then continue throughout 2020 during an 11-month transition period.
