Sakaka: Nasser Al-Attiyah led the way in Monday's eighth stage of the Dakar Rally and clinched his fifth stage win of this year's race in Saudi Arabia, taking his career victories in the historic event to 40.
The Qatari moved to within four minutes and 50 seconds of the overall lead, which is held by Stephane Peterhansel.
France's Peterhansel lost time after finishing third on stage behind Al-Attiyah and defending champion Carlos Sainz of Spain.
Chile's Jose Ignacio Cornejo Florimo claimed his first stage win of this year's race and took the overall leader in the bikes section from American Ricky Brabec, who finished third on the day.
Cornejo Florimo's Honda team-mate Toby Price took second place, which moved the Australian up into second overall.
Frenchman Xavier de Soultrait abandoned the race after suffering injuries in a crash that required a helicopter rescue.
