Crying Is Beneficial For Your Health

Crying or weeping is the shedding of tears in response to an emotional state, pain, or a physical irritation of the eye. Emotions that can lead to crying include sadness, anger, and even happiness. But in this article we let you know why crying is beneficial for your health and well-being.

Crying is one of the most relatable human reflexes because it is associated with heightened emotions. Many-a-time we stop tears from flowing down our eyes because we think crying is a sign of weakness but it, in fact, is a very brave and human thing to do. Apart from that, as it turns out, it is also beneficial for your health and wellbeing. Tears are saltwater, just like the ocean. It helps lubricate our eyes and remove irritants.

According to Medical News Today, there are three types of tears:

Basal: A protein-rich antibacterial liquid which is constantly secreted by the tear ducts. It keeps the eyes moist every time we blink.

Reflex: Wind, smoke, and onions trigger these tears. They help clear out the irritants from the eyes and protect it.

Emotional: These tears are a response to the high-intensity fluctuations of emotions that humans feel. They have more levels of stress hormones than other types. Humans shed tears in response to a range of emotions. These tears contain a higher level of stress hormones than other types of tears.

Regulates the mood

Crying helps elevate one’s mood substantially. Studies have pointed out that most criers have felt that they felt better after crying especially when they were comforted by someone else. A crier feels happier and more secure when comforted by a close one during crying.

Relieves stress

It is believed that after effect of a long session of emotional crying is relief because emotional tear contains higher level of hormones than the regular ones. So when the tears flow down, you feel like a heavy burden has been lifted off your chest and you can finally breathe freely.

Reduces emotional and physical pain

When have a good cry and go to sleep you often wake up with puffy eyes, but do you also feel a reduction in emotional pain as well? Studies say, you could! After crying thee is a healthy release of oxytocin and endogenous opioids in your body also known as endorphins. These are feel-good chemicals and help in easing both emotional and physical pain. The release of these chemicals calms your body down.

Improves sleep

Many would agree to this instantly because ‘crying helps you sleep better’ is a very popular phrase. Pent up emotions and suppressed stress can keep you awake night after night. When you finally cry your emotions get an outlet to flow and you are somewhat at peace and are also exhausted which helps in inducing a good night’s sleep.
