Kanpur (Uttar Pradesh): Taking suo motu cognizance of a letter by an RTI activist in the Gorakhpur incident, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has registered a case against Gorakhpur District Magistrate Vijay Kiran Anand, Senior Superintendent of Police Vipin Tanda and Station House Officer (SHO).

The RTI activist, Danish Khan in his letter addressed to the NHRC, has alleged that the police are trying to create trouble in the enquiry of businessman Manish Gupta succumbing to the injuries following a police raid in a hotel. Injury marks were found all over the body of the Gupta. He was also hit hard on the front side of the head, due to which he was bleeding from the nose. The Gorakhpur police said that Gupta slipped during the routine police checking and injured himself. However, one of Gupta's friends, Hardeep Singh Chauhan, who was staying with him in the hotel, alleged that the police brutally thrashed Gupta. Gupta's wife Meenakshi and his father Nand Kishore, have also accused police of beating him.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath who met the victim's family members during his visit to Kanpur assured them full justice after which Gupta's wife, was provided with a government job by the government. Ex gratia of Rs10 lakh announced by the government was also handed over to the family of Gupta.
