Ballia (Uttar Pradesh): Hathi Singh, a 45-year-old man who broke his vow to remain unmarried after learning that the panchayat (local body) seat he wanted to contest was reserved for women, had to face a defeat in the three-tier panchayat elections in Uttar Pradesh.
The results of the three-tier panchayat elections in Uttar Pradesh were announced on May 5, and the dream of Singh winning the panchayat elections remained unfulfilled.
In the year 2015, Jitendra alias Hathi Singh of Shivpur Karna Chhapra, Gram Panchayat of Muralichhapra block, contested the Panchayat election. That time, he lost by 57 votes and was positioned second.

Again, in 2021 he wanted to contest the panchayat elections, but this time the seat was declared reserved for women. Singh's dream of entering the electoral field seemed to be shattering. But, his supporters suggested that if he gets married, his wife can contest elections.

Following the suggestions of his supporters, Singh decided to get married ditching the pledge of celibacy. Before the nomination, he married Nidhi Singh in Bihar court despite there were no auspicious dates. Later, on 26 March, they got married in the Dharmanathji temple of the village. As soon as they got married, his wife got herself involved in campaigning. But the couple faced disappointment in the results.
