Reports allege use of expired Remdesivir in Salem govt hospital

Amid concerns over the country facing the shortage of Remdesivir, a piece of startling information is doing the rounds that at the Salem Government Hospital, the anti-viral drug Remdesivir that has crossed the expiry date, is being administered to the patients.

Salem (Tamil Nadu): Amid concerns over the country facing the shortage of Remdesivir, a drug used as part of Covid-19 treatment, reports from various quarters say that the Salem government hospital has been administering expired Remdesivir drug to its patients.

According to a press release from the Joint Director of the Salem District Health Department, in Salem district, 478 people have been newly infected and two persons have died. It was also known that so far in the district, out of 37,980 people, who had been infected, 34, 607 persons had been cured after treatment and discharged from the hospital.

Moreover, 2,886 persons are under treatment in the district. The number of casualties recorded till Friday (April 23, 2021) was 487, said the press release.

Against this background, a piece of startling information is doing the rounds that at the Salem Government Hospital, the anti-viral drug Remdesivir that has crossed the expiry date, is being administered to the patients.

It is also said that the vial of drug used for enhancing the immunity power of the patients has a new label attached to its exterior, extending the date of expiry by six months. That is, a sort of manipulation of expiry date has allegedly been done to use Remdesivir up to October this year.

But unfortunately, our calls have not been answered at all.
