Odisha youth raises lakhs after appeal on social media

Sumit Turuk, a young man with a strong willpower, had vividly described his desire to pursue higher education and pleaded for financial assistance to fulfil his dream.

Koraput (Odisha): A youth of a nondescript village under Narayan Patna block of Koraput district has been able to collect Rs 37 lakhs in just three hours after making a donation appeal on social media for his higher studies at the Oxford University.

Sumit Turuk, the young man with strong willpower, had vividly described his desire to pursue higher education and pleaded for financial assistance to fulfil his dream.

Turuk from Tentulipadar village located in the Maoist infested region of Koraput district in southern Odisha is the son of a primary school teacher.

He wanted to study in a Delhi University affiliated college, but could not arrange the required finance to take admission. He later applied and secured a seat at Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru University.

Sumit has also applied for admission to Oxford University in England. He was successful and received permission to travel to England for higher studies. However, he failed to get a scholarship. He required around 47 lakhs to study at Oxford University.

He had also contacted the Odisha Government for financial assistance. However, the state government of Odisha has no plans to support or finance higher education.

Turuk made a passionate appeal on the social media platforms, seeking financial donations to fulfil his dreams of studying at Oxford, England.

He said the fundraising organization cooperating with him in this regard has received Rs thirty-seven lakh within three hours of his request on social media.

Turuk is confident that he will be able to arrange the remaining Rs 10 lakh by June 30.

He says that after completion of his study, he will work in the direction of arranging higher education for the students of the rural areas of Odisha. He has urged the Odisha government to make arrangements for adequate finance for higher education.
