Madhya Pradesh: Heavy rains lashed several parts of Madhya Pradesh on Sunday, with the Indian Meteorological Department predicting heavy to very heavy downpour in 32 districts of the state till Monday morning.
IMD official PK Shah said Bhopal received 62.1 millimetres of rain between 8:30 am and 5:30 pm on Sunday.
Officials said five of 13 gates of Kaliasote reservoir in the capital city have been opened due to heavy rains.
Earlier today, a two-year-old girl died after falling into an overflowing drain in Bhopal, police said.
"A toddler identified as Anushka Sen fell into a drain in spate near her house in Fanda area of Bhopal," assistant sub-inspector Rajesh Manjhi of Khajuri police station said.
"She was found caught in a net in the drain. She was declared dead on arrival by hospital authorities," he added.
Heavy rains also lashed Seoni, Mandla and Khandwa regions, officials said, adding that 12 out of 20 gates of Indira Sagar reservoir in Khandwa, the biggest in the state, had to be opened.
The state government has declared all the government and private schools in the district to remain closed on Monday in view flood warnings in the state.
Various other regions of the state have also faced similar devastation due to floods.
The incessant rains in Harda district for the last two days, has brought life to a standstill.
Due to the rise in the level of all the rivers in the district, more than a hundred villages have lost contact with the district headquarters.
The Harda district has crossed 1283 mm of rain till 8 am on Sunday, while the total normal rainfall in the district is 1261 mm.
The city council, police and home guard staff have been deployed to deal with the situation of the people by constantly monitoring the people to help them.
The heavy rains in the state also caused the bridge over Kalisindh river to get disrupted.
Due to excess rainwater in the area, traffic jams were caused and long electrical wires had fallen on roads putting the lives of people in danger.
Kalisindh located on the Indore Betul National Highway caused a long line of vehicles for several kilometres.
The biggest impact of the rains has been seen on the drainage system of the state. The Bargi dam in the state has reached the danger level.
The maximum water level in Bargi dam is considered to be 422.9 meters. Presently, water has reached almost the same level.
The water level is rising as a result of which, the catchment area of the dam has also begun to get filled.
The excess water caused 21 gates of the dam to be opened, releasing two lakh sixty-four thousand cusecs of water to be released into the rivers of the state.
If the rain in the entire state does not cease soon, thousands of acres of crops are expected to be ruined because of it.
