Rahul meets Wayanad nurse who was present during his birth

Congress President Rahul Gandhi today met Rajamma Vavathil, a retired nurse who was present during his birth. Gandhi is on a three-day visit to his constituency Wayanad.

Kozhikode: On the last day of his three-day visit to Wayanad, Congress President Rahul Gandhi met retired nurse Rajamma Vavathil, who was present in the hospital at the time of his birth, here on Sunday.

Rajamma told Gandhi it was neither Rajiv Gandhi nor Sonia Gandhi, but she who first cuddled him. Hearing this Gandhi hugged her again.

Rajamma met Gandhi earlier on Sunday at the place where the Congress President had put up for the night in Wayanad. The moment was captured and Leader of Opposition Ramesh Chennithala posted the picture on Facebook.

Chennithala is accompanying Gandhi in his constituency on the roadshows which entered the third day on Sunday.

Rajamma after her retirement, is now settled in Gandhi's constituency and had expressed her desire to various Congress leaders that she would like to meet him, that became a reality on Sunday.

Rajamma was working as a nurse at Delhi's Holy Family Hospital, where Rahul was born on June 19, 1970.

She reportedly held newborn Rahul several times in her hands, and felt 'fortunate' that she was present during the birth of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's grandson.

Gandhi, who netted 7,05,034 votes in Wayanad, won by 4,31,063 votes against his nearest rival PP Suneer of Left Democratic Front (LDF) in the constituency.
