Assembly polls in J&K after completion of delimitation exercise: Manoj Sinha

While addressing a press conference at Srinagar on Tuesday, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha said that the Assembly polls in the Union Territory would be held only after the completion of the delimitation exercise.

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Tuesday said that the Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir would be held only after the completion of the delimitation exercise and the decision in this regard would be taken by the Election Commission of India (ECI).

While addressing a press conference at Srinagar, Manoj Sinha said that the Delimitation Commission was doing its job and will add seven new assembly constituencies in the Union Territory after which Assembly elections would be held.

On the restoration of statehood for Jammu and Kashmir, he said, "It has been announced by the Union Home Minister in Parliament and people should have faith in his promise that the state status will be restored in due course."

Speaking about the security situation in Kashmir, he said that the police and other security forces were working together to improve the situation and have achieved a great deal of success. "The security situation in Jammu and Kashmir has improved as compared to previous years. The law is being fully enforced and recruitment into militancy and infiltration has come down," he said.

Earlier in the day, Sinha attended an event organised as part of parliamentary outreach programme for the empowerment of Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs), which was attended by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and several Union ministers.
