Kashmir holds R-day events amid tight security

Republic Day events were held in Srinagar amid tight security as mobile internet services were suspended. Advisor to Lt Governor Manoj Sinha, Baseer Khan, led the parade of police and CRPF contingents at Sher-i-Kashmir International Cricket Stadium.

Srinagar: Amid tight security, Republic Day functions were held in the summer capital, Srinagar, of Jammu and Kashmir union territory and other district headquarters.

The major function was held at Sher-i-Kashmir International Cricket Stadium in Srinagar, where advisor to LG Manoj Sinha, Baseer Khan, led the parade of police and CRPF contingents.

In his speech, Khan said that UT administration is focusing on the development and progress of all the districts of Jammu and Kashmir and the main focus is on creating welfare and employment opportunities for youth.

Tight security was put around the venue as hundreds of police and CRPF personnel were deployed to thwart any untoward incident.

All the roads leading to the venue were blocked with barricades and no individual was allowed to move towards it.

Security forces maintained vigil around the venue by using Drone-mounted surveillance cameras.

Authorities on midnight suspended the 2G internet services in Kashmir on Tuesday as a precautionary measure for ensuring smooth passage the celebrations. However, mobile calling services were not barred this time.

Suspension of mobile phone and Internet services on Republic Day and Independence Day has been part of the security drill in the valley since 2005.
