Haryana: Man consumes spurious liquor, loses eyesight

A man hailing from Sonipat in Haryana consumed spurious liquor and lost his eyesight. Over 30 persons died in the last twenty days after allegedly consuming spurious liquor in different localities of Sonipat city.

Sonipat (Haryana): A 50-year-old man went blind allegedly after drinking spurious liquor at Gumad village in Haryana's Sonipat district on Sunday.

According to sources, the man, identified as Jitendra, drank liquor that had a poisonous spirit mixed in it.

When he complained of chest pain, his family members rushed him to the hospital. While undergoing treatment there, doctors declared that Jitendra has lost his eyesight, sources said.

"After arriving at my house, my eyesight started to become blurry before everything went dark. I panicked and sought help from my family members. I fell unconsciously and I don't know what happened next," said Jitendra.

"When I opened my eyes, it was dark everywhere. Doctors said that I have lost my eyesight because of consuming spurious liquor. I cried a lot since I am the sole breadwinner of the family. I will never drink alcohol in my life," he said.

"Many people have died in the last twenty days in different localities of Sonipat city in Haryana with police suspecting spurious liquor as the cause behind the deaths," Sonipat deputy commissioner, Shyam Lal Punia said.

"The family members did not come forward to report about the deaths. I have ordered an investigation into the incident. I have directed the officials to take stern action against people selling poisonous substances. The police conducted raids at shops in Sonipat and recovered bottles of illicit liquor," Puniya added.

Sonipat deputy commissioner Shyam Lal Punia and superintendent of police Jashandeep Randhawa visited several places of the district and interacted with the families of the deceased, mostly poor labourers.

Reportedly, as many as 35 people have been killed after consuming suspected spurious liquor in different localities of Sonipat as of today.
