Dismissing a petition seeking enquiry against former CJI Ranjan Gogoi, the Supreme Court said that it has now become infructuous. The court argued that since Gogoi does not hold office anymore, the plea cannot be entertained any further.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed a petition seeking inquiry against the former Chief Justice of India, Ranjan Gogoi, for misusing his authority as an SC judge.

A bench led by Justice Arun Mishra was hearing the plea filed in 2018.

The bench observed that Justice Ranjan Gogoi has demitted the office and the plea was not pressed last year, thus making it infructuous.

The petitioner, however, argued that his plea was not listed by the registry despite dozens of reminder letters.

The plea had sought an inquiry against the former for alleged bias and improper conduct in passing an ex parte order in July 2016.
