'Nipun Bharat' mission to make children proficient in reading, writing

The Ministry of Education has launched NIPUN Bharat Mission (National Initiative for Proficiency in Reading with Understanding and Numeracy) on Monday. This new initiative by the Education Ministry aims for the effective implementation of the new education system, including proficiency in the ability to read, write and understand numbers in young children.

Under this new initiative, this program will work towards developing the reading, comprehension, and number calculation abilities of children up to class 3. Children in the age group of 3 to 9 years will be covered under this scheme. Special learning materials will also be prepared for the children under this scheme.

'Nipun Bharat' mission has set a target of 2027 for every child in the country to achieve basic mastery in reading, writing, and numeric calculations. For this scheme under 'Samagra Shiksha', the Ministry of Education has fixed a budgetary allocation of Rs 2130 crores in the year 2021-22.

Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal while launching said that every child should know reading, writing and numbers in basic education. It is an important part of the new education system and the Prime Minister himself has also said this in his address. The Education Minister has termed the 'Nipun Bharat' mission as a historic education initiative in the country.

Nipun Bharat Mission will be implemented in five phases, starting with implementation at the national, state, district, block, and school. The implementation process will be closely monitored at each level. Under the scheme, by the year 2026-27, it has been decided that every child of the country will have basic knowledge of reading, writing and counting numbers between the age of 3 to 9 years.
