AIIMS Patna starts human trial of COVID-19 vaccine, first dose given to 30-year-old man

First dose of COVID-19 vaccine given to a 30-year-old young man in Patna AIIMS on Thursday. Doctors informed that the man later has allowed going home and after 14 days he will be given another dose.

Patna AIIMS Patna has started the human trial of coronavirus vaccine on 18 volunteers selected by the hospital authority.

A team of experts has given a half ml dose of COVID-19 vaccine to a 30-year-old young man in Patna on Thursday, after which the young man was kept in observation for four hours.

"The young man later has allowed going home, after 14 days he will be given another dose," the doctor said.

Several people contacted the AIIMS hospital to take part in the trial but only 18 people aged between 18 to 55 years were selected for the process.

The selected volunteers first go through a medical check-up and after analysing their reports they will further proceed for the trial.

As per ICMR guidelines, the first dose of the vaccine given to those whose reports will be fine. After the first dose of the vaccine, the patient will be under a doctor's supervision for 2 to 3 hours after which they will be sent home.

A total of three dosages of injection will be given to the patients to complete the trial process.

The vaccine, jointly developed by the National Institute of Virology-Pune and Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech International Limited (BBIL) in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), is the first indigenous vaccine being developed in India.

AIIMS-Patna is one of the 12 medical institutes in the country to have been shortlisted by ICMR for conducting a human trial of the indigenous vaccine.
