England: Manchester United have received permission from the city's council to install 1,500 barrier seats at Old Trafford for trial use from next season.

United will install the seats in the North East corner of the stadium and if the trial is successful the club may look to do the same in other areas.

United have struggled to deal with the problem of persistent standing for a number of years at Old Trafford.

With a capacity of just under 75,000, the stadium is the biggest club ground in English football.

Standing at top-flight games in England has been illegal since 1994 following recommendations made by Taylor Report after the Hillsborough disaster of 1989 where 96 Liverpool fans died.

Changes to the Sports Ground Safety Authority guidelines in 2018 now permit the use of barrier seating.

In the Premier League, Wolves were given similar permission to install barrier seats in Molineux's South Stand before the 2019-20 season.

Meanwhile, the English Premier League is eyeing a resumption of the season on June 8, behind closed doors due to the coronavirus pandemic, and hoping to bring the season to a conclusion by July 27.

The Premier League has 92 matches remaining since it suspended the season on March 13 with Liverpool agonisingly close to their first ever EPL title.

The matches would be played partially behind closed doors with a maximum of 400 people being permitted to attend matches, according to a report in a leading news daily.

The report further states that Premier League bosses have shared their idea ‘Project Restart' with shareholders this week and have been in conversation with the British government along with other sports bodies on a possible restart to the league.
