Arshdeep Singh's maiden five-for, fifties from Sai Sudarshan and Shreyas Iyer powered India to clinch a victory by 8 wickets in the first ODI of the three-match series at New Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on Sunday. These two teams will now face each other at St George's Park in Gqeberha on Tuesday.

Johannesburg: KL Rahul-led young Indian side registered a dominating win over South Africa in the first one-day international match at the New Wanderers Stadium here on Sunday. Arshdeep Singh claimed his maiden five-for and Avesh Khan registered his career-best figures of four wickets for 27 runs to bundle out South Africa 116 runs in the first innings. In reply, India lost the early wicket of Ruturaj Gaikwad but then Shreyas Iyer and debutant Sai Sudarshan controlled the innings and took India post 100-run mark. Shreyas Iyer lost his wicket just after reaching his fifty. However, Sai slammed a maiden ODI fifty on his debut and stood there on the ground till the last run.

  • IND 116/2 (17 Overs)
Sai Sudarshan and Shreyas Iyer's fifties guided India to a dominating victory over hosts South Africa in the first ODI. Sudarshan scored a quickfire 55 off 43 balls and Iyer amassed 52 off 45 balls. Both the batters reached their fifty in quick time and ensured India would not lose another wicket early on. India were only six runs short when Iyer gave a simple catch to David Miller, bowled by Andile Phehlukwayo. Tilak Verma, who came to bat at number four, scored a winning run towards fine leg.
  • IND 61/1 (10 Overs)
Despite losing a wicket of Ruturaj Gaikwad early on, India looked solid marching towards the win quickly. The debutant Sai Sudarshan has shown that he has that temperament that will help him to succeed and go big at this level. Shreyas Iyer is looking calm and composed as always, steering the ball into the gaps for singles and doubles and getting a boundary on poor deliveries. There were no signs of threat from the South African bowlers so far. Fifty up for India in quick time here. Both the batters would look to finish things off early.

END OF SOUTH AFRICA INNINGS

  • SA 116/10 (27.3 Overs)
Pacer Arshdeep Singh picks up his maiden five-wicket haul and becomes the first Indian bowler to pick a five-for against South Africa. Arshdeep Singh came out to bowl his second spell in the 21st over and picked the wicket of Andile Phehlukwayo, who showed the courage to stay on the crease and top-scored with 33 of 49 balls. And an over later, chinaman Kuldeep Yadav also got his man and removed Nandre Burger (7 off 32 runs), who kept defending and building a second-best partnership of the inning with Phehlukwayo. South Africa's innings finished on 116 runs. However, India again failed to get wickets of the lower order quickly, after reducing the hosts to 7 for 58.
  • SA 80/8 (20 Overs)
After a shocking start, losing seven wickets inside 13 overs, South Africa lost only one wicket in the last seven overs. However, the runs are not coming as expected. Pacer Avesh Khan has now four wickets in his pocket. This is also his best ODI figures so far. Avesh removed right-hand batter Keshav Maharaj for just four runs. Andile Phehlukwayo is keeping the strike and searching for boundaries while debutant Nandre Burger is eyeing to survive and give as much as a strike to his partner. Together they have added 23 runs in the last five overs.
  • SA 65/7 (15 Overs)
After Arshdeep's lethal spell, Avesh Khan joined the party by taking wickets of skipper Aiden Markram, David Miller, and all-rounder Wiaan Mulder inside three overs. Avesh cleaned up Aiden Markram on 12. Mulder came to bat after the skipper, got a little unlucky. It was expected that Miller, who smashed a scintillating century in the World Cup semi-final against Australia in a similar position, would take South Africa to a safe total, but missed out on this opportunity and gave a regulation catch to stumper KL Rahul. India would look to bundle out Proteas' innings as early as possible after a superb start.
  • SA 52/4 (10 Overs)
Left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh picked four wickets in five overs to wreak havoc on Proteas as India controlled from the beginning. Arshdeep first castled Reeza Hendricks on the fourth ball of his first over and then sent Rassie Van der Dussen back to the pavilion on the very next ball. Dussen went to play a flick shot and missed the ball and got trapped in front of the wickets. Left-arm batter Tony de Zorzi showed some power-hitting skills with two fours and two sixes. Zorzi and Markram stitched a 39-run partnership and were looking dangerous. But then, Zorzi went for a pull shot on a short pitch delivery around the fifth stump, the ball took the top edge and landed safely into the hands of KL Rahul. Henrich Klassen (6) also fell cheaply. There were no real signs from the South African batters to stay on the crease. They kept choosing false shots and at times did not read the bowlers.
