Lawmaker hails Indo-Myanmar joint operation, appeals for talks too

While talking to ETV Bharat, Manipur MP Lorho S Pfoze said that the 'Operation Sunrise' was fine but the centre should bring all insurgent groups to the table for peace talks.

New Delhi: While the Indo-Myanmar joint 'Operation Sunrise' was hailed by many, a lawmaker from Manipur has appealed the central government to bring all insurgent groups together for peace talks.

Talking to ETV Bharat a Member of Parliament from Manipur Lorho S Pfoze said, "The joint operation against the insurgent groups are ok, but this is not a permanent solution. The groups may again reunite. Therefore, it's better to bring all the insurgent outfits to the negotiation table."

In the past five months, the armies of India and Myanmar have launched two phases of joint operations along the Myanmar border targeting camps of insurgent groups operating in North East.

Named Operation Sunrise, the strategy is aimed at hitting militant groups that are impacting both India and Myanmar.

The first phase of this operation was launched in February when several camps were destroyed in Myanmar close to the border, both in the north and south closer to Mizoram in India.

Body:"The joint operation against the insurgent groups are ok, but this is not a permanent solution. The groups may again reunite...so it's better to bring all the insurgent outfits to the negotiation table," said MP from Manipur Lorho S Pfoze to ETV Bharat.

The Indian and Myanmer army carried three week long joint operation from May 16 to flush out Northeast based militant outfits from Myanmar. Code named Operation Sunrise, the joint effort was able to nabb around 70 militants from different organisation including Ulfa, NSCN, KLO among others.

Similar joint operation was carried three months back.

Myanmar is one of the strategic neighbour of India that share around 1640 kms border.


Conclusion:MP Pfoze further said that the border roads should also be developed.

"Government should take steps so that the border roads are developed. This will not only improve connectivity, but also improve trade between India and Myanmar," said Pfoze.
