Speaker Biswajit Daimary said that he will try to keep the MLAs aware of the accurate House Rules, how to raise their issues, how they can express their views, how to maintain decorum in the House and so on. ETV Bharat Senior Correspondent Gautam Debroy writes.

New Delhi: Speaker of the 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly, Biswajit Daimary, has rolled up his sleeves to teach all the MLAs from ruling and opposition parties in the State on the proceedings of the House and how to maintain its decorum.

The Speaker will take the class ahead of the budget session of the State Assembly scheduled to be held in July. “When the next session of the Assam Assembly commences in July, I will take the class for all MLAs,” said Daimary in an exclusive interview to ETV Bharat on Wednesday. The newly appointed Speaker was in the national capital to meet Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and Rajya Sabha chairman Venkaiah Naidu. This is the first visit of Daimary to New Delhi after being elected as Speaker. Daimary said that he will try to keep the MLAs aware of the accurate House Rules, how to raise their issues, how they can express their views, how to maintain decorum in the House and so on.

“All MLAs cutting across party lines will get an opportunity to speak in the House. However, they have to raise their voice as per Rules of the House,” said Daimary. Daimary said that it’s good to make all MLAs aware of the importance of zero hours, calling attention and all other terms to make the proceedings in the House fruitful. An MLA from 2001 to 2006, Daimary represented Bodoland Peoples Front (BPF) in the Rajya Sabha as an MP from 2008 to 2014. He represented BPF in the Parliament again from 2014 to 2020 before switching over to BJP for getting elected as Rajya Sabha MP in 2021.

Daimary later resigned from Rajya Sabha to contest the recently concluded Assembly election on a BJP ticket from the Paneri constituency, which he won. “During my stint as an MP, I gained huge experience on the proceedings of the House and its several other Rules. In fact, I was fortunate enough to get the opportunity to interact with the topmost politicians of the country from all parties,” said Daimary. The Assam Assembly Speaker, Daimary, also recalled his friendly interactions with veteran politician and senior-most BJP leader Arun Shourie.

He recalled, “My session in Rajya Sabha was very encouraging. In fact, my interaction with Arun Shourie was always pleasant. He kept inspiring me on all issues. Whenever I spoke on any issue, Shourie used to encourage me.” Daimary said that he will try to introduce such a kind of togetherness and encouragement amongst all the MLAs in the Assembly.

“This is a big opportunity for me. I got the chance to chair the House and I will try my best to interact with each and every member of the House so that the atmosphere in the House remains friendly and cordial,” Daimary added. It may be mentioned here that Daimary during his stint as an MP used to raise all important issues related to Assam.
