Mizoram asks HM's intervention to get supply of emergency medicines

Following the border clash between Assam and Mizoram on July 26, several organizations in Assam had blocked the National Highway 306. This has resulted into a complete halt of goods entering Mizoram which include basic medicines, life saving medical drugs and Covid19 medicines as well, writes ETV Bharat's senior correspondent Gautam Debroy.

Kolasib (Mizoram): Mizoram government has appealed Union Home Minister Amit Shah for his personal intervention to ensure that supply of essential and life saving drugs does not get disrupted following blockade imposed by several organisations in Assam. Following the border clash between Assam and Mizoram on July 26, several organizations in Assam had blocked the National Highway 306.

"I have written a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah asking for his personnel intervention. Due to blockade of National Highway connecting Mizoram several vehicles carrying life saving drugs are being stranded causing a major problem for us," said Dr R Lalthangliana, Mizoram health minister in an exclusive interview to ETV Bharat.

"This is totally inhuman. Even in an war like situation there was no blockade of national highways...this is really tragic that our own state imposed blockade," the Mizoram health minister said, adding that authorities and organizations in Assam had asked transporters carrying lakhs of life saving drugs, antigen test kits not to go towards Mizoram.

"This has resulted in a complete halt on goods coming to the State, which include life saving medicines and Covid19 medicines as well. Even oxygen cinders, oxygen plant materials and covid19 test kits have been blocked," Dr Lalthangliana said.

Mizoram in northeast is one such state which has been witnessing a huge spike in Covid19 cases. Till date Mizoram has registered 39,363 cumulative Covid cases. The state has witnessed deaths of 150 people. Mizoram has 12,189 Covid active cases as on today. The state has witnessed 6268 cases in May, 8093 cases in June and 18,433 cases in July. It may be mentioned here that the Union Health Ministry too has expressed serious concern over the recent spike in Covid cases in Mizoram.
