Congress moots 12,000-km yatra to revive party's fortunes in Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow: With state assembly polls around the corner, the Congress has decided to take out a 12,000-km long Yatra in Uttar Pradesh under the leadership of party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi.

The party will take out the campaign rally—Congress Pratigya Yatra: Hum Vachan Nibhayenge, Congress said in a statement. The decision to take out the rally was taken at a meeting of Gandhi and members of the advisory and strategy committee.

"The yatra will cover 12,000 km and will pass through villages and towns of the state. The details of the yatra are being finalised," the congress statement read.

Gandhi, who is also the party's in-charge of the State, reached the Congress headquarters in Lucknow on Friday to review Congress's preparedness ahead of the upcoming assembly polls and discuss strategies with various party committees.

According to sources in the party, Gandhi will hold several key meetings in order to strategise poll planks and strengthen the organisation at the grassroot level.

Gandhi, who is also in-charge of Congress in Uttar Pradesh, has lined up a series of meetings with the election campaign committee and strategy committee members.

Besides, the Congress leader will also review all the campaigns which are being run by the party. She will take feedback from senior Congress leaders and various committee members regarding the criteria and selection of party candidates for the upcoming elections.

Speaking about Gandhi's visit, Congress spokesperson Anshu Awasthi exuded confidence and said the party is geared up for the 2022 elections.

On reaching the Congress headquarters, Gandhi paid floral tribute to Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant's portrait on the occasion of his birth anniversary.

Congress was virtually decimated to single number seats in the previous assembly elections in 2017. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had won 312 seats in the 403-member legislative assembly to form the government for the second consecutive term.
