Myth Busting

Not everything that you read or see on social media is true. Many people use this platform to spread information, but the information may not be necessarily true. Many times factless rumours are spread and we start believing in them. Here are some more myth-busters by the World Health Organisation (WHO):

  1. Can exposure to heat prevent COVID-19?
NO. Exposing yourself to the sun or higher temperature (higher than 25°C.) cannot prevent or cure COVID-19. Countries with hot and sunny weather conditions have also reported cases of COVID-19. Therefore, following the preventive measures is the only way to keep yourself safe.
  2. Cold weather or snow can kill the virus
No. “There is no reason to believe that cold weather can kill new coronavirus or other diseases. The normal human body temperature remains around 36.5°C to 37°C, regardless of the external temperature or weather.”
  3. Taking a hot bath can prevent the disease
NO. Hot or cold bath, the normal body temperature of a person remains the same around 36.5°C to 37°C and it does not kill the virus. Also, bathing with extremely hot water can be harmful as it can burn your skin.
  4. Hydroxychloroquine cures COVID-19.
NO. Research is still going on, but until now, there is no proof of it being able to cure this disease. “The misuse of hydroxychloroquine can cause serious side effects and illness and even lead to death”.
  5. Can it spread through house flies or mosquito bites?
NO. “To date, there is no evidence or information to suggest that the COVID-19 virus transmitted through house flies or mosquito bites. The virus that causes COVID-19 spreads primarily through droplets generated when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or speaks. You can also become infected by touching a contaminated surface and then touching your eyes, nose or mouth before washing your hands”.

Therefore, where #IndiaFightsCorona with the help of the front line workers, it is our duty to follow all the instructions given by the authorities and take preventive measures to stop the spread of the novel coronavirus and flatten the curve.
